Quilt was a king crowntail who fell in love with a human. He made a deal with the Devil (literally) to become human so he could realize his love, an obvious parallel to The Little Mermaid. However, there's a catch. Since he's shown regularly submerging himself in a bathtub and switching between his human form and fish form (), it can be inferred the transformation's not a complete one. As danhasretired's said in their reply to this comment, bettas can surface in order to breathe oxygen, but that doesn't mean they can survive on land. This drawback could be an allusion to that fact and considered his version of the mermaid's curse. In keeping with the constant breathing imagery used throughout the lyrics, love - to Quilt - is air: something he can't stand to live without, but, should he choose to subsist himself entirely off it, will inevitably lead to his end.

the eight months that Biz & Zera have been on hiatus, whether for the production of “Bettaration” or some other project.. have undeniably been worth every second. If I could listen to this song again or experience it live in some way shape or form, I absolutely would. there’s something indescribable that makes their songs so captivating, each release snatches you into this twisted perception of “love”. everything is so uncomfortably seductive, and the raspy, breathy vocals are the cherry on top. whoever this new girl is she’s incredibly endearing. the way she contorts her facial expressions utterly disturbing and intriguing. I think she’s some sort of cannibal too the corrupted ones are the best. I’ve listened to this nearly 20 times now. this song and “Schadenfreude” are going to be favorites for a loooong time. @sleepi at it shows a long finned betta fish and male betta fishes typically have the longer fins than the females do, and there were some little stuff shown in the video that male betta fish only do. the bubbles might be one of them cus apparently the male bettas can blow bubble nests and stuff
