It's polluting the minds of people and turning them into slaves to trends under the guise of something desirable and fulfilling. She calls it a "fairy tale" because the world that people are choosing to believe in is one where they avert their eyes from reality. Aster chooses to see reality and knows that the "nonfiction only has a fly in the ointment", meaning that the product is tainted.

I thing Aster is displaying a "neon" or "mainstream" self when she's outside, so she basically tries to act like she's no different from everyone else in order to fit in ( when she's walking outside she is coloured neon) but when she's alone she is coloured white, she can be her true self (
