Everybody's made the connection between Quilt being a male betta and the species' violent behavior being all over the lyrics, though I can't help but feel there's a certain level of irony being invoked, particularly whenever he's associated with female imagery. His androgynous design, the song using あたし as his first person pronoun, having him talk about himself "birthing" love, him looking up at the bubble nest at instead of being the one to protect it. The dead male betta paralleling the supposedly dead figure (face obscured, legs spread) also points to the idea of him not coming out on top in the end.

- This isn't anything conclusive but I still wanted to add it: The frame at with The Owner/Devil's hand and Quilt's in parallel with each other as Quilt opens his eyes in the background depicts the moment he became human, but it also seems evocative of this idea that, after mating, nothing good awaits the female betta when she wakes up after being mounted to the point of exhaustion (

the eight months that Biz & Zera have been on hiatus, whether for the production of “Bettaration” or some other project.. have undeniably been worth every second. If I could listen to this song again or experience it live in some way shape or form, I absolutely would. there’s something indescribable that makes their songs so captivating, each release snatches you into this twisted perception of “love”. everything is so uncomfortably seductive, and the raspy, breathy vocals are the cherry on top. whoever this new girl is she’s incredibly endearing. the way she contorts her facial expressions utterly disturbing and intriguing. I think she’s some sort of cannibal too the corrupted ones are the best. I’ve listened to this nearly 20 times now. this song and “Schadenfreude” are going to be favorites for a loooong time. I need to figure out how to burn CDs so I can have it on standby whenever I don’t have my phone. 💉
