I think a lot of people know this already, but this song is based on "Night on the Galactic Railroad," a story about two friends, Giovanni and Campanella. SPOILER ALERT They go on a train journey through the stars together and at the end one of them, Campanella, disappears. The other, Giovanni, wakes up and goes into town only to be told that Campanella drowned in the river and is dead. They went on one final journey together. This song is from Giovanni's point of view--you can see at the burial of Campanella, and also in that section you see Giovanni crying and the bridge above the river where Campanella died.
